Jos Unrest: Youths Clash with Security Forces Over Urban Renewal Initiative
Jos, Nigeria, witnessed unrest on Monday as a minor skirmish between security forces and youths enforcing an executive order escalated into violence. The youths, reportedly angered by the implementation of the order, clashed with security personnel deployed to enforce Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s directive aimed at curbing illegal building constructions and traffic congestion in the state capital.
The clash, which erupted near the Kugiya market, resulted in the destruction of several vehicles and buildings. An eyewitness reported that over 10 cars were set ablaze during the confrontation. Governor Mutfwang had previously signed Executive Order No. 003, 2024, to address the growing concerns regarding unplanned development and worsening traffic flow within Jos.
The Plateau State Police Command intervened to restore normalcy in the area. While the exact cause of the initial skirmish remains unclear, the incident highlights the complexities of implementing urban renewal initiatives in Nigerian cities.
